Bond has been set in excess of a half million dollars for an Ark City man accused of murder in the shooting death of another local man.

40-year-old James Lyle Clark is facing a charge of intentional second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of 38-year-old Samuel Hutton on Nov. 20. He remains in the Cowley County Jail with bond set at $550,000.

Ottawa-based attorney Forrest A. Lowry has been appointed to serve as legal counsel for Mr. Clark, who has made his first appearance.

In addition to the murder count, Clark has been formally charged with two counts of felon in possession of a firearm, aggravated assault (for a separate incident), and drug charges. A next appearance is set for Dec. 10 in the courtroom of Ark City Judge Christopher Smith.

Following the shooting, Hutton was taken to South Central Kansas Medical Center after police responded to the intersection of U.S. 77 bypass and Madison for the report of a shooting. He later died of his injuries.

During subsequent investigation, police identified Clark as a suspect in the shooting, which they determined had occurred at his residence at 1325 South A St. in southeast Arkansas City.

The two men reportedly knew one another, well.

Clark was taken into custody early the morning of Nov. 21 following a search.
